Woman dies in Arkansas River near Zoom Flume

Sandra Johnson, 51 of Littleton, died Sunday, July 3, following a rafting incident on the Arkansas River. Chaffee County Sheriff John Spezze said that the county communications center received a call at 12:30 p.m. of a woman falling from a raft in the Browns Canyon area.

Sheriff: Rescuers’ lives put in danger

Chaffee County Sheriff John Spezze wants to remind residents and visitors about some basics when venturing into the mountains, following the risky rescue of of a skier March 14, that Spezze said placed the lives of around 20 volunteers and sheriff’s deputies in danger.

Snow Biker Killed in Avalanche Near Cottonwood Pass

On February 5 at approximately 12:18 pm the Chaffee County Communications Center received a call of an avalanche in the Cottonwood Pass area near the summit. Cottonwood Pass is in northwest Chaffee County near Buena Vista, Colorado. According to witnesses in the area who were snowmobiling they heard what sounded like an avalanche in the Lost Lake area of Cottonwood pass.

Search and Rescue Responds to Dual Calls for Help

On Monday, July 20th, 2015 at approximately 2:13 p.m. the Chaffee County Communications Center received a 911 call from a lost hiker on Mt. Shavano. Nearly thirty minutes later, they received another, unrelated 911 call for help from two hikers below the summit of Mt. Columbia.

Search & Rescue retrieves injured mountain biker, helps lost hikers, responds to high country rollover

Chaffee County emergency responders retrieved an injured mountain biker, a 55-year-old Virginia man, July 17 on Alpine Tunnel trail. Their first indication of the accident was through a SPOT device that had been activated at about 2:45 p.m. Undersheriff Derek Bos said SPOT devices relay the GPS coordinates of an emergency, but they provide little other information.

Mudslide closes road, results in evacuation

A series of mudslides closed CR 344 just below Cottonwood Lake Thursday, resulting in a voluntary evacuation of 150 people from Cottonwood Lake Campground. The campground will be closed at least until today, when the stability of the area will be evaluated.
