Founded in 1964, the Chaffee County Search and Rescue Team was born out of necessity as outdoor recreation began to grow in the rugged landscapes of central Colorado. Nestled in the heart of the Rocky Mountains, Chaffee County boasts the Collegiate Peaks and a variety of wilderness areas that draw adventurers from near and far. The team started as a small group of dedicated volunteers, primarily ranchers, hunters, and local outdoor enthusiasts, who came together to assist those in distress in the area’s unforgiving terrain. Their early operations relied on basic tools, strong intuition, and sheer determination to navigate mountain trails and respond to emergencies.

Over the decades, advances in technology and training transformed the team’s operations.
The introduction of GPS devices, avalanche beacons, and advanced communication tools allowed for more precise rescues, while medical advancements enabled volunteers to provide life-saving care in the field. Highlight missions, such as daring helicopter extractions from precarious cliff edges or multi-day searches for lost hikers in the Sawatch Range, demonstrated the team's adaptability and commitment. These rescues not only showcased the evolving skillset of the volunteers but also highlighted the growing collaboration with neighboring agencies and the Mountain Rescue Association, of which we are now a certified member.
Since the 1960s, Chaffee County has experienced a massive influx of visitors and residents drawn to its natural beauty and outdoor opportunities. This surge in population and tourism has significantly increased the volume and complexity of rescue missions. The team now handles a wide variety of emergencies, from technical rock climbing accidents to medical evacuations for remote trail runners and mountain bikers. Despite the increased demands, the team continues to uphold its legacy of selflessness and perseverance, maintaining a strong connection to the community and a deep respect for the wilderness they serve.
